Euro zone industrial production fell more than expected in December, official estimates showed on Wednesday, pulled down by a drop in the output of capital goods, used for investment.

Industrial production was still up 2.9 per cent from February 2017, but the rate of growth slowed sharply from 3.7 per cent in January and 5.2 per cent in the final month of 2017. The contraction in production, which has now completed its second full year, has left production 6.9% lower than it was at its December 2017 peak. November production had shown a slight uptick, but December indicates that it is too soon to call an end to the eurozone industrial recession. In November 2019, industrial production remained stable in the euro area and in the EU27. In December 2019 compared with December 2018, industrial production decreased by 4.1% in the euro area and by 3.9% in the EU27.
